In this modern dance class we will explore the intertwining of technique and creative exploration, line and breath, architecture and emotion. We will begin with traditional warm-up consisting of pliés, tendus, spinal curves, etc. interwoven with imagery to drive our movement from the inside out. Exercises will emphasize alignment and integration of the mind and body while we investigate weight, suspension, energy flow and momentum, undulations, easing in and out of the floor, and rhythmic clarity as inspired by the breath. We will use focus and intention to shape our movement as we transition into across-the-floor exercises and complex choreographic phrase work. How can the body’s natural impulses and sensations drive dynamic movement that pushes past mental barriers to reach both physical and emotional extremes? We will explore how simultaneous energies of sinking, falling, oozing, reaching, tearing, and flying allow us to consume the space vigorously with anatomical sentience, athleticism, and artistry.

Raised in Vermont, Aria Roach graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University with her BFA in Dance and Choreography. As an undergraduate she spent a semester at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in Israel and received a 2015 Dean’s International Study Grant to travel to Vienna, Austria. During her time at VCUarts, Aria appeared in works by Martha Curtis, Autumn Waddell, and several student works including Kara Robertson’s Amid, presented at American College Dance Association’s National Festival at the Kennedy Center. Aria has since had the pleasure of performing work by Eva Dean (Eva Dean Dance), Erin Carlisle Norton (The Moving Architects), Nicoletta Serio, Zoe Walders, Alison Manning & Jesse Keller (DanceTheYard), and Bethany Logan (Wild She Dances), and has presented her choreography at Built on Stilts Festival, Southern Vermont Dance Festival, and Iona College. Aria’s administrative experience includes roles as Artist Services Intern at The Yard, Operations Coordinator at Mark Morris Dance Group, and her current position as Company Manager for Caleb Teicher & Company. She is a Coach and Teaching Artist with Dancewave, and a Company Dancer with Eva Dean Dance and The Moving Architects. @ariaroach
