INFORMAL

Karar Dance Company presents INFORMAL. No lights. No Costumes. Dance in its purest form.

TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE!

Engage with the dancers and company through dialogue, Q&A, and immersive tasks. INFORMAL is a unique opportunity to both see and experience modern dance.

Two youth choreographers from the Richmond area will also present original choreographed works created through the company's Young Dancer Mentorship program.  Isabel New and Ashlyn Richards will premiere dance works they crafted on their peers and will join Karar for the post show talkback.  This scholarship program is supported by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.  Visit karardancecompany.org/mentorship to learn more.

The company presents four works.  All share a through line of "change" and an element of "duality".

Shapeshifter explores the human relationship with change.  A trio of dancers flurry in a world of uncertainty and transformation as they step into the unknown.  Movement is interstitially woven by a delicate power as the dancers come to find that change is both inevitable and vital in order to discover the beauty on the other side.

Shapeshifter premiered in St. George, Utah at the Red Rock Dance Festival in June 2023.  This work was made possible by Virginia Commonwealth University of Dance & Choreography and E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.

Pass navigates the hustle and bustle of daily life.  A duet of dancers move through space in rigid, sharp unison as others pass them by as if they have blinders on.  This work reminds audiences to take notice of those around you.

Pass premiered in the 2022 installation of INFORMAL.  This presentation will include bodies traversing through space in addition to the original duet created.

Kaizen first premiered in 2016 for the company's inaugural performance at the Grace Street Theater.  Karar will present an excerpt of this work.  The word kaizen is derived from Japanese, meaning "change for better" and combines the word kai, meaning change, and zen, meaning good. Abstract movement searches the varying emotions of progress.

Karar premieres Leave the Light on.  This is a solo work set to contemporary music, a shift from the company's classical influence.  A soloist brings her thoughts into the light, allowing positive revelations and shifts.  She makes space for new opportunities as she releases the old.

After graduating, Ryan attended Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently a dancer, choreographer, musician, composer, and educator in the Richmond area.

Class Description: Starting slowly but increasing physically, the dancer will begin finding their connection to the floor and will go through techniques to properly and safely move in and out of the floor.

Maurice Fraga (guest faculty) is originally from San Francisco, California, and has earned B.A., M.A, and M.F.A. degrees in dance from the University of California, Santa Cruz, The College at Brockport, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, respectively. He has danced for Ben Munisteri Dance, David Parker and the Bang Group, the Kevin Wynn Collection, Michael Foley Dance, Creach/Company, the Tiffany Mills Company, the Mark Morris Dance Group, O Vertigo (Montreal), and Fluxusdance (Dublin). Fraga’s work has presented in the United States (NYC, Miami, D.C., Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Francisco), Canada, Ireland, Ecuador, Spain, Taiwan, and in 2012 and 2013, he was commissioned by the National Dance Company of El Salvador to create the evening-length work, Sí…así, and Rehuir. He has taught in the U.S., Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Greece, Ireland, Macedonia, Taiwan, Spain, and the United Kingdom. His choreography has received various awards and his musical score for the documentary "Exploring Hinterland," was nominated for Best Sound Music Score at the 2013 International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema in London, UK. He is the Chair of the Dance program at Shenandoah University and is the artistic director of his own dance company, Ekilibre.

Class Description: The dance practice of Efficient Chaos is based on combining classical and contemporary techniques to grant the dancer greater awareness of neutral/natural states of being, so that he/she may accomplish a wide variety of technical/movement tasks with greater ease. The techniques taught incorporate natural, fully physical, energetic and subtle dance movements that are based on release techniques, yoga principles, Bartenieff Fundamentals, floor work, and improvisation. As the work evolves, the time spent on the exploration of passing through different states challenges the dancers to find more committed and honest approaches to their own performance and improvisational personas, without losing their essence of human personality.

Amy Perkinson received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Choreography and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/International Business from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also spent time at the University of Virginia- Institute of Shipboard Education Study Abroad, as well as the Consorzio Universitario Mediterraneo Orientale A R.L in Siracusa, Italy. She had the privilege of continuing her education by attending the American Dance Festival Winter Intensive, Doug Varone and Dancers Winter Intensive, Joe Goode: Movement for Humans Workshop, and was a member of the Inaugural ODC Next Moves Summer Intensive in San Francisco, California. She performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center in Mark Dendy’s world premiere of “Ritual Cyclical.” Amy is currently a member of Harper Continuum Dance Theatre, where she recently performed with the company and the University of Las Vegas Nevada (UNLV) at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City. She is the proud Co-Owner of Pure Barre Williamsburg and co-founder of Tennessee Arts Collective. Amy currently resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Amy danced with the company October 2016 - July 2021 and taught at the 2022 Summer Workshop. Amy currently resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Class Description: This class will explore unique ways to approach alternative processes and considerations of how dance can always provide more choices through movement exploration. The class will provide tangible and accessible entries into improvisational prompts and guidelines, perfect for all levels of experience.

Sabrina Sabino (guest faculty) is originally from upstate NY where she began her ballet training at an early age. She furthered her education and trained at Canada’s National Ballet School for four years which included an exchange program to the John Cranko School in Stuttgart, Germany. Homegrown Choreographers Young Dancer Mentorship (Applications Open)

DEADLINE EXTENDED; APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28 AT 11:59 PM.

Karar Dance Company’s Homegrown Choreographers program launches the annual Young Dancer Mentorship. Two selected choreographers aged 14-18 will be mentored by Karar’s Artistic Staff as they create original choreography for presentation at the EXPAND Summer Workshop on July 16, 2022 in Richmond, Virginia.

This is a scholarship program made in part by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.

The Homegrown Choreographers Young Dancer Mentorship program is the first of its kind in Virginia, born from the absence of choreographic development programs extended to young, aspiring modern dance creators in the state. The program serves two novice modern dance choreographers aged 14-18 through direct mentorship by Karar’s Artistic Director Kara Robertson and Associate Artistic Director Corin Illsley Gonzalez over a four month period. The two selected choreographers will be mentored free of charge as the mentees create one original choreographed dance each. Both choreographers will select four dancers from their peers who will learn choreography. Mentees will present their dance works built during the Homegrown Choreographers Young Dancer Mentorship at the conclusion of the EXPAND Summer Workshop taking place July 14-16, 2022 at Dogtown Dance Theatre.

One selected mentee will reside in the Richmond area (defined as any geographic area within an hour’s drive from the city). The second mentee will reside outside of the Richmond area but within the state of Virginia.

Interview Series

Karar Dance Company is excited to welcome Emily Morgan, Keith Johnson, and Torian Ugworji to the second annual Interview Series lineup.

Artistic Director, Kara Robertson, sits down with each artist to learn more about their dance field expertise, gather professional development advice for YOU (our community), and provide insight into their success and how they got to where they are today.

Each Interview will be released online on the company’s Vimeo and YouTube platforms the second Friday of every month through December and will be available to stream at any time free of charge.

Catherine Faszewski

Catherine Faszewskiʼs early training began at Chesterfield Dance Center and consisted of an array of styles such as modern, tap, jazz, ballet and hip hop. Growing up, she had the opportunity to attend several dance conventions and workshops with her studio where she took classes from a variety of teachers and choreographers. Catherine attended Virginia Commonwealth University and received her BFA in Dance and Choreography in 2014, training with the incredible faculty including Christian Von Howard, Courtney Harris, Scott Putman, Melanie Richards, Martha Curtis, Judy Steele, James Frazier and Autumn Waddell. She was selected to work with guest artists such as Kate Weare, Nathan Trice, and Stephanie Martinez where she had the opportunity to travel and perform at the American College Dance Association in both her junior and senior years. While in school, Catherine had the opportunity to travel to Italy and train under World Dance Movement with such amazing faculty as Desmond Richardson, Bruno Collinet, Michele Assaf, and Igal Perry.

After graduation, Catherine became a full time faculty member at Chesterfield Dance Center teaching a range of classes as well as choreographing for their dELIRIUM company. While working, she traveled as a member of Malayaworks and the REDproject and began performing along the east coast. Catherine also had the opportunity to be on film in Courtney Harris and Charli Brissleyʼs “Left of Canvas” that was a piece of their multi-media immersive performance salon event “20 Rue Jacob” in which she had the opportunity to portray the twentieth-century painter Romaine Brooks.

From 2016 to 2018 Catherine moved to Los Angeles where she was signed with the Movement Talent Agency. She continued to train in a mixture of styles at Millennium Dance Complex and The Edge Performing Arts Center as well as with Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company. During her stay in LA, Catherine had the chance to perform all over the city including at Club Jete with The Ladies of Purr all the while continuing her love for teaching at Danceline LA and Carlos Santana School of the Arts.

This year, Catherine returned as a faculty member of Chesterfield Dance Center. Throughout her time away, she continued to choreograph for dELIRIUM Dance Company but she is happy to finally be able to spend more time with her students.

"Post" | Richmond Dance Festival 2020 (virtual)

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Richmond Dance Festival takes place virtually on May 1 at 5pm. This year’s festival will address the theme Isolation to Creation.

Artistic Director, Kara Robertson, has created a solo dance film to represent KARAR DANCE COMPANY.

Kara Robertson's Post follows a solo dancer grounded and confined to specific parameters of space. The dancer creates room for growth, carving and linking opportunities. Paired with Ryan Davis' original score, also created during this time of quarantine, Post is a hopeful investigation of isolation.
