Homegrown Choreographers Young Dancer Mentorship (Applications Open)

  • Richmond, Virginia USA (map)

DEADLINE EXTENDED; APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28 AT 11:59 PM.

Karar Dance Company’s Homegrown Choreographers program launches the annual Young Dancer Mentorship. Two selected choreographers aged 14-18 will be mentored by Karar’s Artistic Staff as they create original choreography for presentation at the EXPAND Summer Workshop on July 16, 2022 in Richmond, Virginia.

This is a scholarship program made in part by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.

The Homegrown Choreographers Young Dancer Mentorship program is the first of its kind in Virginia, born from the absence of choreographic development programs extended to young, aspiring modern dance creators in the state. The program serves two novice modern dance choreographers aged 14-18 through direct mentorship by Karar’s Artistic Director Kara Robertson and Associate Artistic Director Corin Illsley Gonzalez over a four month period. The two selected choreographers will be mentored free of charge as the mentees create one original choreographed dance each. Both choreographers will select four dancers from their peers who will learn choreography. Mentees will present their dance works built during the Homegrown Choreographers Young Dancer Mentorship at the conclusion of the EXPAND Summer Workshop taking place July 14-16, 2022 at Dogtown Dance Theatre.

One selected mentee will reside in the Richmond area (defined as any geographic area within an hour’s drive from the city). The second mentee will reside outside of the Richmond area but within the state of Virginia.
